The Wellington Phoenix was founded in 2007 after the withdrawal of the New Zealand Knights from the A-League. Enjoying much greater success than their predecessors, the club made history in 2009/10 by becoming the first New Zealand team to make the finals of an Australian football competition. The club made the finals again last season, but were eventually eliminated by Adelaide United. Their manager, Ricki Herbert, has also had success at international level, steering the New Zealand national side through the 2010 World Cup undefeated.
